“Pour a cup of tea and I’ll tell you more …”

Jak grew up in a house where cup after cup of tea was consumed and it is this cultural institution that turned him towards himself during lockdown and the Covid-19 pandemic. He wanted to understand this ‘new normal’ he, his family and friends suddenly found themselves in.

This ritual of drinking tea meant moments of reflection about a life that was turned upside down. Not only for Jak, but also for the thousands of readers that gathered in Koppieteefontein.

“Stay calm and make a cup of tea” was the mantra of the moment, a spontaneous culture of laughing and crying and sharing, and where everyone is welcome.

A year later, on 1 October 2021, this getting together over a cup of tea turned into the programme ‘Koppieteefontein’ on kykNET. Over a cup of tea (what else!), Jak talked about all things life with celebrities like Evita Bezuidenhout, Nataniël, Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck, Amanda Strydom, Hannon Bothma and Leon Schuster.

At the end of each programme, Jak gifted his guests with a uniquely designed teapot. The ‘residents’ of Koppieteefontein wanted in and that was the start of the Koppieteefontein lifestyle series. Teapots became cups, cups became plates, plates became aprons.

And now there is an impressive Koppieteefontein online shop! During lockdown, Jak delved into his art with a renewed vigour and prints of his work, as well as his lyrics, now appear on the products.

Come, stop a while at Koppieteefontein where we love Afrikaans, art and culture, and where we can shop and get together and maybe also just make new friends.
